‘His First Flight’ by Liam O’ Flaherty is a true parable about overcoming fears in life. Every journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step. But that single step is the most difficult one to make. Conquer the fear and venture forth, and we realize that we were born with wings.

  • What is significant about the bird’s first flight?

The young Seagull was hungry. Being so, he needed searching for food. His family members forced and motivated him to fly and learn how to drive for catching fish.

  • What lesson do you learn from this story?

This story gives us a great lesson that some task may appear much difficult. But we have to take the risk and initiative and try our potential best to overcome them.

  • Why is it difficult to do something for the first time?

It is very difficult to do something for the first time. It is so because one is not familiar with the task and has not gone through such experience before.

  • What restricted the young Seagull to reach his parents for a single scrap of food?

On each side of the Seagull, the ledge ended in a sheer fall with the vast sea beneath. This restricted him to reach his parents as he could not fly.

  • How did the young Seagull’s parents treat him initially when he did not fly?

Initially, when the seagull was afraid to fly, his parents use to call him shrilly. They rebuked him, threatened him and taunted him as a coward.

  • Why did not his parents, brothers and sister give him food?

The young Seagull should have made an attempt to fly and search for his food by himself. His family members behaved with him rudely as they did not want him to be fearful and coward.

  • What trick did the young Seagull’s mother ply to make him fly from the ledge?

The mother tore a piece of fish and fly towards the young Seagull. She reached closed and halted just in front of him. This maddened him and he dived for grabbing that piece of fish.

This episode can be an important lesson to develop self-dependence. We, the human being, get the protection of our family, but this protective behaviour hampers our mental development.
